But there’s one thing that I love about you

Your style
- Waterfront

What did we do before the Internet? Sometimes I get tired of the interweb and the constant influx of communication and junk. But then, every once and a while, the web opens up and gives you a precious gift.

Behold, “Cry” by Waterfront. This song was, like, totally my life for one summer. Me and my BFF Courtney would swim all day and listen to ZYP and wait for this to come on. And this was around the time that I discovered Vh1 and MTV so I would squeal with delight when this video came on. And can you blame me? The lead singer was HOT.

Excuse me while my 11 year old self smiles my face right off….

Thank you, Internet. I love you always.

(And if anyone out there can find me the CD or a mp3 of this I will buy you a present. No seriously, I will.)

Video killed the radio star

- The Buggles

Modern radio pretty much sucks. I think we can all agree on that, right? And please note, I’m just talking about regular old run of the mill free radio. Not XM or Sirius that you rabid fans tell me about every day. (I know - I can’t believe I don’t have it, either).

Anyway, point is, the music industry is changing big time and I’m personally no longer relying on the radio to tune me into new music. In fact, the radio is the last place I’d go to hoping to find something new and cool. But that’s really a whole ‘nother conversation.

But for today, here’s a fun little group activity for us, though. Let’s fashion a list of songs that radio has effectively killed for us. I’m not talking about songs you just hate, but songs that radio has played so many times that you find it hard to enjoy them anymore. Songs that they have run into the ground and then broke off. Songs that you hear EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. THE. RADIO. IS. ON. Come on, it’ll be fun!
(In no particular order):

1) Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison
2) Every song every made by Elton John
3) Most any song by Billy Joel
4) You’re So Vain – Carly Simon
5) Power of Love – Huey Lewis and the News
6) Margaritaville – Jimmy Buffet
7) I Want To Know What Love Is – Foreigner
8) Love Shack – B52’s
9) Pretty much everything by James Taylor
10)Most everything by Chicago

There you go – I gave you a starting point. Jump on in, people.

I hate myself for loving you

-- Joan Jett and The Blackhearts

I thought it might be fun to do a little series on some guilty pleasures. So I'll tell you some things I love that make me somewhat ashamed, but as a bonus, I'll give you those items' antidotes that make me feel a bit better. Y'all play along, too, ok?

1) "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne
Grrr..... I can't believe I like this one, but I do. Why should I hate myself for loving it? It's a total rip off of "Mickey" by Toni Basil and the hand claps and cheering doesn't work nearly as well as it did for Gwen Stefani with "Hollaback Girl." But I still like it.

The Antidote -- "Introducing Joss Stone" by Joss Stone. If you're not familiar with Joss she's a 19 year-old soul singer from Britain. She's fantastic. I skipped her last record because I heard the lyrics were childish, but girl is definitely grown on her third effort. Joss penned songs like "Headturner" "Baby, Baby, Baby" and "Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now" more than make up for my little Avril indiscretion.

2) “What Goes Around Comes Around” by Justin Timberlake
I’m sorry y’all, I can’t NOT be a bit embarrassed to like a song with these lyrics: “You cheated girl, my heart BLEEDED girl.” Seriously. Work on the rhymes JT – you should have time to do so since the sexy has been fully brought back. And the title itself is cliché, but I’m steady singing it in the car on the way home every.single.day.

Antidote – “Makes Me Wonder” by Maroon5
I don’t think I could possibly explain how excited I am that Maroon5 has new music out! And PS, it’s freaking awesome. The track is just hot, that’s all there is to it. A bit disco, a bit Prince-esque, but still M5 through and through. You can check it out on their site.

Ok, there will be more to come, so your turn – hit me.

Go ‘head girl

Go ‘head get down
Go 'head girl
Go 'head get down
-- Kanye West

First of all I should probably just tell you that I am all over that song. I LOVE it! Apparently I’m not the only one because it’s on fiyah right now. Anyway, am I the only one that has interesting experiences in stores, restaurants, Arby’s, etc.? Or maybe I just have a knack for exaggerating mundane experiences for the purpose of entertaining my friends via my blog or otherwise.

Today I ran over to Arby’s for lunch. I had a bad headache and I was really just trying to run in and out and lucky for me, it was relatively empty. Now, I’ve visited this establishment for 3 years so I pretty much know the folks that work there. Today I didn’t recognize anyone.

There is typically a manager that keeps things moving and it’s usually the same lady. Today it was a guy and he was all over it – he’d be all like, “Yes and here’s a number 4 for here with curly” etc. This was all done in a sort of sing song fashion all the while he was sort of bouncing around, too. “Where’s my turkey sub, where’s my turkey sub.” I watched, not really amused, until ---

“She give me money, when I’m in need… Giant roast beef to go with a Jamocha shake… oh she a trifling friend indeed…” Ok, that’s what I’m talking about. I so wanted to jump in “Now I ain’t saying she a gold digger…” But I didn’t. The next order came up, “Ok, who had a number 2 to go?” Well, that’d be me, sir! I stepped up and he handed it to me, promptly turned on his heel with, “SHE GIVE ME MONEY…” I asked the cashier for ketchup – “I need some ketch—“ “WHEN I’M IN NEED…” “—up and Horsey sauce plea—“ “SHE GIVE ME MONEY” “—please.” “WHEN I’M IN NEED.” With that I left and let him continue singing the Ray Charles sample. And NO, that is NOT Jamie Foxx, people – it is Ray Charles. Jamie only does the part at the beginning.

Apparently the Arby's guy’s woman ain’t no gold digger because he just kept saying She give me money. LOVE IT!

We can’t be certain

Who the villains are ‘cause everyone’s so pretty
-- Sheryl Crow

Anyone catch the World Music Awards last night? I was flipping between that and Rockstar: INXS so I didn’t see all the fun, but I had just a few thoughts. First, though, about Rockstar – I heard it is getting a second season. How exactly will that work?? I guess Mark Burnett is currently wondering what the guys in Right Said Fred are up to these days….hmm….

Anyway, I’m just going to admit it – and you can hate me for it – but I am loving Mimi. That’s right – Mariah is back, y’all. She’s actually released 3 freaking great songs right in a row and anyone with the hot Wentworth Miller in their videos has got to be living right. So as she was sh-sh-shaking it off, it occurred to me that we have a very interesting double standard in the music biz these days. Mariah did it, Usher ALWAYS does it, Destiny’s Child ALWAYS does it, along with numerous other performers – they have their entire song – lead vocals, backing vocals, etc. all playing in their “live” performances. Now, it may only be the case for the chorus for some – like Amerie on “One Thing” (love that track, btw) because lord knows she couldn’t really sing that loop live. But what’s up? How come my girls Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle can groove all over a chair and only occasionally really sing and no one says anything? No one would dare say a thing about Mariah or Usher having help with backing tracks. Anyway, I hate lip synching and totally think it sucks, but I just wonder how some get away with it and some get reamed for it.

Tell me your secrets

I’ll tell you mine
When it makes us feel better, call it love
-- Poco

So I haven’t paid too much attention to this business about Bill Clinton getting his own CD, I’ve just read the bare minimum to get the point. And of course Starbucks has been rolling hot and heavy with the business of having say, Sheryl Crow, put out a CD of her favorite music.

You know where this is going, don’t you?

I’m thinking about it, but I haven’t yet narrowed down the definitive Dabbs collection, but when I do, you’ll be the first to know.

And you know what’s next, don’t you?

Hit me – I don’t care what your musical tastes are, even if you just give me 10 or 12 tracks by the same artist, jump on here and let me know. And I know, how can you define us complicated gen X and Yers in such a fashion? You can’t see the whole picture in 10 -12 tracks, blah, blah. And you’re right, but come on, just for fun. You too, Grace!

On your mark

get set go
Let me go
Let me shoop to the next man in a 3 piece suit
-- Salt N Pepa

What's all this about Bush and his IPod? Seriously -- they've dubbed (ha, dub - no pun intended) it "IPod One." Come on. I have been very interested in it, though. Not because I care what he listens to, but just the sheer insanity that there is this hoopla around it is funny to me. I've seen on TV and read on the 'Net that this is all supposed to be important because "the playlist is a mirror to the soul." I'm sorry, what? Who cares if he likes "My Sharona" so do I and it doesn't mean anything.

Wonder what folks would think of my playlist? What do the following artists say about me that lets you glimpse into my soul? 50 Cent, ABBA, Alanis Morissette, Alicia Keys, Amy Grant, Annie Lennox, The Beach Boys, Beyonce, Bryan White, Cake, Captain and Tenille, The Cardigans, Catherine Zeta Jones, Chely Wright, Clay Walker, Cyndi Thomson, Def Leppard, Destiny's Child, The Dixie Chicks, The Eagles, En Vogue, Ewan McGregor, Gavin DeGraw, George Benson, Grayson Hugh, The Guess Who, Heart, Hootie and the Blowfish, Imani Coppola, Isula, Janet Jackson, Jason Mraz, Jay Z, Jennifer Lopez, Jo Dee Messina, Joey McIntyre, John Mayer, Joss Stone, The Judds, Keith Urban, Kelly Clarkson, The Kinks, LeAnn Rimes, Lenny Kravitz, Lil Kim with Notorious BIG and Puff Daddy, Lil John with Ludacris and Usher, Limp Bizkit, Ma$e, Mariah Carey, Mark Wills, Maroon 5, Matchbox Twenty, Michael Buble, Michael Tolcher, Nate Dogg with Warren G, Nicole Kidman with Ewan McGregor, Notorious BIG, Oasis, Outkast with Sleepy Brown, Quad City DJs, Rascal Flatts, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Regina Regina, Renee Zellweger,Roseanne Cash, Roy Orbison, Run DMC, Rupert Holmes, Salt N Pepa, SheDaisy, Sheryl Crow, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Stevie Nicks, Thrasher Shiver, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Toya, Train, Trisha Yearwood, U2, Usher, Wilson Pickett, The Zombies.

So, what did you see with that glimpse into my soul?

Nah, I more like to think it's a glimpse to my psyche, not soul. Either way, I know y'all be hating on my taste in music, so be nice if you choose to comment. To each their own.

Have a good weekend!

Say it isn't so

It isn't so
-- Hall and Oates

Kenny G. and Earth, Wind and Fire duet on "I like the way you move." YES, the Outkast, Sleepy Brown ear candy gem, "I like the way you move." I'm shocked and appalled...
