And are you lonely

Looking for yourself out there?
--Train

I’ll admit it – I watch American Idol. So what? I mean, I didn’t get into it for the past few seasons but I somehow got reeled in this time. Ok sure it's most likely because Ace is just so damn pretty. And that’s ok. Because if you are reading this, the one sure thing you probably know about me is my obsession with music. So why wouldn’t I watch? I don’t think of Idol as the end of civilization as we know it, there are plenty of other reality shows out there that should have that title bestowed on them.

So the kids (I use this term loosely, as some of them this year are pushing 30) had the entire 21st century of songs to chose from. I know it’s only a few short years into the 21st century, but come on, surely this wasn’t the best they could do. For the record, last night, I liked Taylor and Paris. But I’m a Mandisa supporter all the way, just didn’t get into the praise song. I guess we’ll see.

So I have a friend that would like to spend her days touring with Sting as a percussionist. I’d like to just be a back up singer. Even on Idol it seems like it would be a plum gig. Well suited for someone like me that doesn’t necessarily like the whole 8 to 5 business. The Chiffons, Shirelles, Supremes, I could have been one of them. Another time, another place.

Like anyone would be

I am flattered by your fascination with me
-- Alanis Morissette

I am right with the millions of folks that are fascinated by celebrities, stars, whatever you want to call them. I mean, some of these folks are very entertaining in their chosen profession – acting, singing, etc. but to watch them navigate around the globe as Goodwill Ambassadors or PETA mouthpieces or furniture jumpers is where the real fun begins.

Anyway, I love how famous folk get together all the time to pat each other on the back: the Oscars, the Emmys, the daytime Emmys, the Grammys, the SAG Awards, the BET Awards, the ACMs, CMAs, MTV Movie Awards, etc. etc. And this is all well and good, but I’m personally glad high profile awards season is on hiatus. Well until May sweeps, that is. These folks work very hard to produce quality television, film, music, radio, soaps, etc. and they do deserve recognition. But what about us real folk? We don’t get to take part in those (and yes I know about the People’s Choice Awards but that’s to congratulate celebrities). I’m talking about awards voted on by and for us regular folk. What do you think? I think everyone could use encouragement, pat on the back, recognition, appreciation, don’t you?

Best Singing in the Car Performance, Best Pretending Like I Care when I don’t give a Crap Performance, Most Kick Ass Recovery After a Bad Breakup, Most Likely to Fall Asleep During A Meeting.

What do you think? Got any others?

Oh I’ll speak my Southern English

As natural as I please
I’m in the heart of Dixie
Dixie’s in the heart of me
And someday when I make it, when love finds a way
From somewhere high on Lookout Mountain, I’ll just smile with pride and say
That my home’s in Alabama, no matter where I lay my head
My home’s in Alabama
I’m Southern born and Southern Bred
-- Alabama

Every once and a while I go back and read some of the dabbs archives. I recently took a look at September 2004 and I’ll have to say, y’all, those were some fun entries and comments and banter. I have been so remiss lately with my posting. So I’m looking for some inspiration.

It’s hard to be positive when the entire free world is on Spring Break and you’re stuck indoors and it is a rainy, nasty day. Boo, hiss!

Anyway, so I’ve got a family reunion coming up this weekend. Those of y’all that know about how these things roll with my bunch should be as anxious as me to see what will transpire. I’ll try to post the good stuff for you here. Ah yes, there is nothing like a good old fashioned Southern family reunion. I think they ought to come and film a KFC commercial, because our clan is straight up on board with the Colonel. I always threaten my mother each year that I will tag the invitation with a no KFC disclaimer. I think last year there were 6 buckets and more mashed potatoes and gravy and coleslaw than you can shake a stick at.

Oh lord, I’m already ramping up for it. I can tell just by how I’m writing and talking. By Friday I’ll be nothing but y’alls and all y’alls and reckons, you just wait and see.

I'm tired

I'm thirsty
I'm wild-eyed
In my misery
-- Stevie Nicks and Sheryl Crow

So, try as I did to avoid the millions of bugs going around, I did catch a little stomach flu last Thursday. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Just so you know I’m not making it up, I’ll let you know that I did throw up 9 times in a 3 hour span. And now you’re probably wondering what kind of person keeps up with that, but I knew the doctor would ask. Of course, I also count how many times I sneeze, and there’s no real reason for that other than it gives my brain something to do in the seconds that I can’t function while convulsing with sneezes.

So back to Thursday. All of the sudden I felt horrible and made the brilliant choice to try and get home quickly. I made it down three levels of the deck in my car before I had to stop and throw open the door -- it was not pretty – stuff on my shoes, my door, etc. It all went downhill from there and I’ll spare you (really myself) the horrible details. I must give props to Grace for coming and picking me up and numerous other things I don't remember and also to Andrea for support and phone calls and numerous other things I don't remember.

I hate being sick. And I was so proud because I hadn’t been sick all winter. I hadn’t been sick since I moved in my house – other than a bad headache or allergy issue here and there. So I’m good now, I better not get sick again until winter, I’m out, I’m done.

So I mentioned Sheryl Crow above and I’d be remiss if I didn’t send good vibes her way. She is hands down my favorite female singer on the planet (and falling inches behind is Stevie) and I wish her the very best with her cancer battle. Oh and Lance Armstrong? Yeah, there’s someone else on my I’m done list.

Hope all is well with my peeps. Peace out.

Everybody needs a little bit of sunshine

Everybody needs time to unwind
Everybody's got to have a good time
I'm just a summer girl
- Jessica Andrews

I am so happy that the sun is out now. And at the same time, I am so very sad that I am stuck inside. It was a long, rainy winter y’all. “Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, let the sunshine in.”
